GW28 Captain Contenders

Can Adebayor steal the captain glory against Cardiff this weekend or will Sturridge's phenomenal form take the biscuit?

Another week of Fantasy Premier League and another gameweek-defining decision to make with you FPL armband. The dilemma this week is not between Suarez and Sturridge, but between Sturridge (away at Southampton) and Adebayor (home to Cardiff). If you are lucky enough to own both in your fantasy team then it can only be a good dilemma to have.

Daniel Sturridge remains the form player in the Premier League after another couple of goals and an assist last week. Liverpool’s GW28 opponents Southampton are not the defensive rock they were at the start of the season; the injury to Wanyama took some of the steel out of their defensive heart.

Liverpool are obviously scoring for fun right now, with Sturridge the chief beneficiary, but we have a funny feeling that Pochettino’s tactical astuteness might be enough to put a dampener on things. The underlying stats suggest they are defending better than results have shown recently.

The bookies tend to agree with this, giving Southampton odds of 15/4 (3.75/1) for a clean sheet. This is not great odds admittedly, nor do we suggest that Liverpool will fail to score, but does not suggest a thrashing is on the cards either. Comparing this to Cardiff’s 6/1 odds of a shut out the bookies certainly expect a higher score line for Tottenham at White Hart Lane this weekend.

This brings us on nicely to Emmanuel Adebayor, fresh from two more goals in midweek against Dnipro in Europe. There has been some concern that Spurs are riding a bit of a wave of late, that their results and goal tally has flattered their underlying performance. This is something we’d agree with, and puts a real question mark over how Spurs and Adebayor will fare when their fixtures toughen up from GW29. However, Cardiff’s recent performances are hardly inspiring and we’d fully expect Tottenham to rack up a few more goals this week.

If you’ve read our newsletter this week (if not sign up here) you’ll see we’ve gone with Adebayor as our captain pick for the InsideFPL team and, although it’s a stretch to go against Liverpool and Sturridge, we’re quietly confident of this one.
