As we draw ever closer to the Saturday deadline we want to take a look at our value and budget player options, also looking for breakout players. The preseason has been quite informative in some cases, and in others there is some hype around players but we're trying to stick to stats where we can, and take some calculated risks to avoid jumping on unnecessary bandwagons. We are working heavily with our fixture analysis top picks and our team strategy guidelines to try and come up with some good options for budget players in our team. Let's start off by looking at Goalkeepers
There are several strategies you can take for your keeper choices. Our preference is to save money in these positions and pick a pair of complementary goalkeepers. A stronger team's keeper may be more likely to get the clean sheets, but they could also make fewer saves.
Costel Pantilimon (£5m - SUN)
This huge goalkeeper dominates the box and he should be a great pick for your team. After displacing Mannone and performing well last season, we think he will give other goalkeepers in his price range a run for their money and given their fixtures, he looks like a great choice.
Kasper Schmeichel (£4.5m - LEI)
Given the slight price benefit over our other option, Kasper could be a better choice. A solid keeper but a drawback here is the other good options at Leicester and given their result last season, picking up too many in their backlines could be a bit of a risk. Still a great option, though.
We will probably look to pickup a couple of strong Defenders from top tier teams and fill the rest of the slots with good value attack minded players. Cleansheets are of course a big consideration but we really like assist and goal potential in our picks and those that could pickup BPS too.
Simon Francis / Tyrone Mings (£4.5 BOU)
Good value full back choices here. Mings, at 6ft 5in, was a club record purchase of £8M. He got a solid 7 assists in the Championship last season for Ipswich and was in the Championship team of the season. Francis picked up 8 assists and a goal but is a yellow card risk so a slightly risky pick too.
Patrick van Aanholt (£5.0 SUN)
With threat going forward and a good amount of assists, clean sheets and points to his name after last season it's understandable he gained value on his price last year. A good choice despite the slightly increased price.
Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.0 LEI)
Played more often in as LM or LW last season than as LB. Very exciting attacking player with speed and goal threat. Given his propensity to play as mid and threaten going forwards, the price is justified and Leicester also has a good chance of picking up some good defensive results.
Leandro Bacuna (£5.0 AVL)
Bacuna has also been playing in midfield during preseason, and could be another good out of position player to pickup.
Matt Ritchie (£6 BOU)
With 15 goals and 17 assists last year, we couldn't ignore Matt despite the slightly higher price tag than our other choices. Could be a gamble here though, with nothing proven in the premier league. But still an exciting option!
Scott Sinclair (£5 AVL)
Having a good preseason for Villa, priced at only £5m which is good value for the potential this player has.
Riyad Mahrez (£5.5 LEI)
This player can do it all - shooting, clever passing, running forward and when on form he is likely to be the best player on the pitch. A really exciting option at 5.5 but can be unreliable, so still could be a risky pickup.
Marc Albrighton (£5.0 LEI)
A good alternative to Mahrez, offering set piece ability and attacking options. Some new choices in Leicester midfield does set a certain amount of doubt here, though.
Our forward choices don't often include a budget option, but given the wealth of strong and pricey midfield options, and some key players (Costa, Aguero) out injured early up front, we might opt for a value player on our frontline.
Callum Wilson (£5.5 BOU)
Had a fantastic season last term with 20 goals and 13 assists. Very young and is expected to improve as he matures. Expected to be a nailed starter unless a replacement is brought in, and could be an excellent differential choice.
Leonardo Ulloa (£6 LEI)
Quality centre forward who had a good season last uear with 11 goals and 4 assists. Most expect him to improve on last year as Leicester become more familiar with the premier league.
Rickie Lambert (£6 WBA)
Moved from Liverpool to West Brom and scored after 23 mins on his debut, and again after half time. We saw his potential at Southampton and we would not be surprised if he had a solid season at West Brom. Only one snag - West Broms first 6 GW are quite tough, facing City, Chelsea and Southampton.
There are obviously many other options out there. These are some of the players floating around our draft right now and we are hoping to share our solid picks to form a good team foundation in another post before Saturday. There are many decisions to make and exciting times ahead! Good luck with your own selections!
